Theatertreffen

Every year, a jury of critics selects 10 remarkable productions from among 450 productions from the German-language region to be presented in Berlin in May. Debate and exchange of ideas about aesthetics, production conditions as well as current discourses will be the focus of the festival’s accompanying programme, along with additional international perspectives, ensuring that Theatertreffen is framed and further developed as an exciting venue for discussing the state of the art of theatre making in the German-language region.

The scholarship programme of the International Forum gatheres international artists to see art together and work on the future of the theatre. The authors and theatre enthusiasts of the Theatertreffen-Blog will provide critical coverage of the festival. (Open Campus turns Theatertreffen into a place of networking and encounters for school and university students. And since 2021, the Forum Ökologische Nachhaltigkeit im Theater (Forum Ecological Sustainability in the Theatre) brings representatives of the theatres invited as one of the 10 remarkable productions together for an exchange of ideas on sustainable culture work.) In addition, several prizes are traditionally awarded during the festival: the Theatre-Award-Berlin, the Alfred-Kerr-Acting-Award and the 3sat-Award.

Theatertreffen is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Media partner: 3sat.

The Theatertreffen takes place annually. he next edition is expected to be held in spring 2025
